З березня і до кінця 2011 року Міністерство освіти і науки, молоді та спорту України припиняє фінансування відділу зимових видів спорту, за винятком біатлону та хокею. Це рішення аргументують фінансовими проблемами.

Спершу на фінансування зимових видів спорту на 2001 рік планувалося виділити 20 млн. грн. На даний час з цієї суми використали приблизно 10 млн. – на 12 зимових видів спорту. Тепер же, за даними Інтернет-видань, річну суму зменшили до 13 млн. грн. Отже, до кінця року (а це і кінець теперішнього зимового сезону, і початок наступного) залишається приблизно 3 млн. грн. Вони будуть спрямовані в основному на фінансування біатлону та хокею (проведення в Україні Чемпіонату світу з хокею в першому дивізіоні).

Це дуже тривожний сигнал для вітчизняного спорту. Адже серед інших зимових видів спорту теж є доволі успішні, які приносили чимало нагород та високих місць на змаганнях найвищого рівня, включаючи Олімпійські ігри (приміром, те ж фігурне катання).

У цьому контексті пригадується 2009-й рік, коли профільне міністерство почало відміняти одні за іншими навіть змагання (юнацькі, юніорські) з таких пріоритетних видів спорту, як легка атлетика…

Утім, будемо сподіватися, що це не тенденція…
